Jason entered the dark and quiet house and sighed. Evelyn and her mates were watching the triplets for him and he hated being away from them this long. While they understood his job had erratic work hours upon occasion, it had been the case too often of late and now, with the missing pack members, he’d barely seen them in days. There was no alternative, as he had to get Naomi back as much for their sake as his own, but they were so young and he doubted they grasped how dire the situation was. What if they didn’t recover Naomi and the others in time? How could he ever tell Ella, Lily, and Avery they’d lost Naomi?

After shedding his boots and coat, he entered the kitchen and opened the fridge. His stomach was churning and he couldn’t remember the last time he’d eaten. He closed the fridge and left the kitchen. Fuck it. What he needed was a few hours sleep. The group would leave early the following morning and, like eating, he wasn’t sure when he’d last slept. A quick glance in the bathroom mirror told him he needed both sleep and food, and much of both. He looked gaunt, thick stubble covered his cheeks and jaw, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. Thinking he looked like absolute shit, he shaved and then stripped, trusting a shower would relax him. Although exhausted he was wired and needed something to calm him. With a scowl, he saw his belt was fastened on a hole smaller than his usual one. He’d lost weight and more than a pound or two. Funny, he hadn’t realized he’d tightened his belt. Then again, not much other than the case caught his attention these past few days.

The hot spray loosened his tense shoulder muscles, and he released a deep sigh. He washed his body and hair and then stood under the running water, hunching slightly to allow it to hit his tight lower back muscles. The memory of his first shower with Naomi, the morning after her rescue from the waystation, clawed through his mind. He tried to push it aside, not because he didn’t want to think of her, but because he knew what would occur next. Unable to prevent it, memories of the time he’d spent with her battered his brain and crushed his heart. He swore he could smell the delicate scent of her skin, and his hands ached with the want to touch her.

As his breath hitched with a mighty sob, he leaned against the cool tiles. Bitter tears flooded his eyes as a wretched pain tore through his heart. No one should be made to endure what he presently did, stripped of two mates, both times by the hand of the same shifter. It wasn’t just unfair, it was cruel. His daughter’s voices rang in his ears, shaking with worry as they asked when Naomi was coming home. They’d asked so many times and he kept assuring them she’d be back soon, even as he couldn’t know if he was lying to them.
